Excerpt Rev. Timothy Dwight's Sermon after the Battle of Yorktown, 1781
Rev. Dwight, one of the prominent preachers of his day, used the passages from Isaiah 59: 18,19 which read," According to their deeds, accordingly he will repay recompence. So shall they fear the name of the Lord, from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him" (KJV) to preach the following excerpt in his sermon "Who, but must remember with hymns of the most fervent praise, how God judged our enemies, when we had no might against the great company that came against us, neither knew we what to do? But our eyes were upon Him. Who, but must give glory to the infinite Name, when he calls to mind that our most important successes, in almost every instance have happened when were were pecularily weak and distressed? While we mark the Divine hand in the illsutrious event we are now contemplating can we fail to cry out, 'Praise the Lord, for He is good, for His mercy endureth forever'."
