General George Washington at Valley Forge as Described by Pastor Henry Muhlenberg

"I heard a fine example today, namely, that His Excellency General Washington rode around among his army yesterday and admonished each and every one to fear God, to put away the wickedness that has set in and become so general, and to practice the Christian virtues.  From all appearances, this gentleman does not belong to the so-called world of society, for he respects God's Word, believes in the atonement through Christ, and bears himself in humility and gentleness.  Therefore, the Lord God has also singularly, yea, marvelously, preserved him from harm in the midst of countless perils, ambuscades, fatigues, etc., and has hitherto graciously held him in His hand as a chosen vessel."

Just prior to encamping at Valley Forge, George Washington told his troops, "To the distinguished character of patriot, it should be our highest glory to add the more distinguished character of Christian."

And General Washington himself said in response to the announcement that the  French forces were joining the American cause, "It having pleased the Almighty Ruler of the universe to defend the cause of the United American States, and finally to raise up a powerful friend among the princes of the earth, to establish our liberty and independence upon a lasting foundation, it becomes us to set apart a day for gratefully acknowledging the divine goodness, and celebrating the important event, which we owe to His divine interposition."

The day after Cornwallis surrendered, General Washington proclaimed a thanksgiving serice for the following day with this order:

"The Commander-in-chief earnestly recommends that the troops not on duty should universally attend with that seriousness of deportment and gratitute of heart which the recognition of such reinterated and astonishing interposition of Providence demands of us."
