The Authority of the Scriptures

Lesson 2 – The Authority of the Scriptures

Key verses to read and review before the study: 2 Timothy 3:15-17, 1 Thessalonians 2:13, 2 Peter 1:21

Principle: The Scriptures, both the Old and New Testaments, are verbally inspired of God and are the revelation of God to man, the infallible, authoritative rule of faith and conduct.

A Sure Foundation

In order to build a house that will weather the storm, you must build that house on a sure foundation. The security of the foundation will determine the future security of the house built upon it!

Our walk with Christ is based upon a strong foundation; The Word of God, the Bible. It is from here that we establish the authority and promise for what God has in store for us.

The purpose of this lesson is not to debate the historical accuracy of the Bible, or to discuss at length how the Scriptures came to be written and canonized.  Those conversations have been going on for centuries! Instead, in this lesson, we will look at what the Scriptures say about themselves.

  1. Jesus believed in The Scriptures-  Mark 7:13, Luke 24:27, John 14:26
  2. The explicit fulfillment of prophecy- Isaiah 53, Micah 5:2, Daniel 9:25-27
  3. The unity of The Bible- 66 books, written by 30 different men from all different levels of society, from shepherds to kings, over 1500 years, in three different languages and in many countries.
  4. The history of The Bible to survive repeated attacks on its veracity and existence.
  5. The character of those who accept and reject The Bible.
  6. The influence of God’s Word on the world and history.
  7. The testimony of The Holy Spirit to the authority of The Word.

15 And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.
16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

13 For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.

21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
